You Don’t Have a Driver Problem — You Have a System Problem | Issue #8

This week reminded me that even as a CEO, you don’t always have everything together.
We (I) dropped the ball on a full route for one of our long-time clients, and I didn’t find out until 5:45 PM on a Friday, long after the route should’ve been completed. The driver actually gave us two weeks’ notice they would be out, so it wasn’t them, it was us on the back end. Instead of getting upset, I poured a drink, sat down, and broke it down. What I realized was simple… we didn’t have a real system in place for driver time-off requests.
Everything was verbal, nothing documented, and that’s exactly where things fell apart. That’s when it clicked again… it’s not always your people, it’s the system you didn’t realize you were missing.
The part I haven’t told you yet is what I did that same night to fix this, and the exact system I put in place so it never happens again. This is the difference between a business that reacts and one that runs.
